AMSTERDAM: With a spirit of zero waste tolerance, Amsterdam is making the most of waste.

Its garbage has turned out to be a fortune for the City of Amsterdam Waste and Energy Company (AEB) which is tasked with turning refuse into sustainable energy and raw materials.

After much delay, the sanction order for funds totalling Rs 3.22 crore for the work of remediation, rehabilitation of Sonsodo waste disposal site with capping finally came to the Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday.

But, the Government has imposed a series of conditions to ensure that the Margao civic body complies with a host of formalities while spending the huge amount.

The UPFA led Council was successful in carring out a smooth council during the past five years, even though the two opposition parties have a majority if they work together, said Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray.

The support given by the opposition parties in this regard should be greatly appreciated, the Chief Minister added.

After getting positive response from the anti-polythene drive, the district administration has launched the second phase of the campaign against plastic bags.

The second phase aims at countering use of plastic bags in rural areas of the district.

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has established a Clean Development Mechanism Cell to control release of carbon in the atmosphere in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol.

According to an official release here, the cell will begin its work by reviewing the functioning of compost plants in Pali, Alwar, Bhilwara and Bharatpur as well as the solid waste management projects in Jaipur and Ajmer.
