Cases of mandatory environment clearance are piling up due to failure of the government to constitute a new State-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and State-level Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC).

The term of the three-member SEIAA headed by AK Goswami expired in October last and the SEAC also completed the term at the same time.

The state pollution control board has issued a set of clarifications on microphone norms the day after Metro highlighted violation at the two meetings attended by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

There has been a drastic decline in the quantity of waste generated by the large, medium and small industrial units in the State in the past one year. As compared to the year 2008-09, the industrial waste has shown a decline of around 54,000 mt tonne in the year 2009-10. Interestingly, the decline is attributed to closure of existing industries rather than regulatory measures.

KOCHI: The expert committee formed to assess the pollution mitigation measures in Greater Cochin area will recommend to the Central Pollution Control Board to lift the moratorium on new industries.
