New Delhi: Pushed to the backfoot by Opposition protests, the Centre on Thursday blinked and announced it would roll back the controversial clause in the sugarcane-related amendments which shifted the financial burden of sugar mills on to state governments.

The deadlock at the Centre over the sugarcane policy was resolved today after the government agreed to delete a controversial clause in the pricing ordinance to ensure that the responsibility of payment to farmers is borne by millowners and not the state government.
