May 5 2010 will probably go down the annals of wildlife history as the first major step taken by the government of Maharashtra for the protection of tigers that are dwindling faster than the receding forest that protects them. In a boost in and around Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), the state government finally issued an notification for a buffer zone around Tadoba.

Mumbai: Three tiger claws

In a state that has the least priority for it, wildlife is finding its own natural ways of surviving and thriving. Reflecting the grave irony is the latest news from the embattled Chaprala sanctuary in Gadchiroli that had recorded the last tiger sighting in 2003

Amidst reports of tiger deaths, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel with wildlife officials spotting over 112 big cat cubs in national parks across the country.

NAGPUR: Four new-born tiger cubs have been spotted at the Tadoba Andheri Tiger Reserve (TATR), located 150 km from here, bringing cheer to wildlife conservationists.

"The four cubs were sighted at the Kolsa range of TATR recently," SP Thakre, chief conservator and field director of the tiger reserve located in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, told PTI.

A day after a tiger on the prowl killed a fourth person in the same forest range, Shivni, in north Chandrapur forests adjoining Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), anger reminiscent of 2007 is returning to the conflict zone.

New Delhi: The Centre today said it had rejected an application by Adani Group to set up a coal mine at Lohara near Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), to supply coal for its 1980mw power plant in Gondia district of Maharashtra.

Mumbai: The proposed coal mining projects by Adani Power Limited and Maharashtra Coal Company Limited near the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, in Chandrapur district, suffered the final blow when the ministry of environment and forest refused to give the projects a go ahead.

In a letter to state chief minister Ashok Chavan dated September 8. Union minister of state, Jairam Ramesh, categorically said no mining activities would be allowed near Tadoba. The letter asked the chief minister to review the dam project on river Human (pronounced Hooman) in Chandrapur district that would submerge forestland near Tadoba.

The recent raid by CBI sleuths at Nagpur railway station and subsequent arrest of poachers and recovery of two tiger skins, one of them being fresh, and 40 kg of tiger bones has once again highlighted the severe threat to wild cat in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR).
