The South Goa District Magistrate has asked requested mining transporters to reduce the volume of truck traffic to 40 per cent on the Tilamol-Curchorem-Sanguem route to avoid accidents on the narrow stretch of road.
A final decision will, however, be taken at the meeting of the ore transporters and mine owners with the Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat later in the evening.

Death toll up 25% in 2009 compared to 2008

CHENNAI: Three years after the State formulated Road Safety Policy there is no sign of reversal in the trend of growing incidence of road accidents. In 2009, nearly 1,000 people more died in road accidents in the State compared to 2008.

The Public Works Department will conduct a road traffic census -2010 on State Highways and major district roads between February 17 and 24.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Tuesday, Superintendent Engineer (Design) H R Shantharajanna said the census will cover 3,821 count posts covering various stretches of State Highways and major district roads.

''Lacunae in road engineering, rule enforcement and education cause accidents,'' said Additional Superintendent of Police Ramesh.

New Delhi: To ensure all victims of motor accidents get compensated, the Supreme Court has suggested levy of cess on petrol and diesel sold across the country besides collection of one-time third party insurance premium on every vehicle sold.

New Delhi: With a view to ensuring that all road accident victims get compensation on time, the Supreme Court has asked the Centre to create a Road Accident Fund (RAF) through levy of cess/surcharge on petrol and diesel and credit it to such Fund.
