Hyderabad, Aug. 22: The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on Friday stressed the need for improving the green cover, particularly in urban areas, as part of the overall objective of transforming the state into "Haritandhra Pradesh.' The Chief Minister planted saplings at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal and launched the ambitious programme of one lakh tree plantations in a day taken up by Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda).

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government's Environment and Forests Department began work on the Capital's fifth new city forest at Rewla-Khanpur-II in Najafgarh Block here on Tuesday. Over 200 schoolchildren from nearby localities planted more than 2,000 saplings in the presence of State Principal Secretary P.K. Tripathi.

Mumbai, July 18 The tree census 2008 figures may show that the green cover in the city has doubled over the decade, but several tree authority members have contended that 19 lakh trees are inadequate for a city with a population of one crore. A city bursting with development, where highways, malls and skyscrapers are mushrooming everywhere, 19,17,844 trees are still short, they assert.

Hyderabad, July 6: Non-governmental organisations have demanded that government should obtain environmental clearance from the centre before taking the up metro rail project in Hyderabad. They said noise pollution would be much more throughout the day even at the silent zones such as schools and hospitals. According to them, the metro rail will cause more than permissible level of noise in city. The voluntary organisation "Concerned Citizen" on Sunday organised a debate on the subject in which both the representatives of NGOs and officials of Metro rail projects participated.

IMPHAL, July 6: Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has said that Imphal city would be developed as a green city under a project to be taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewable Mission, JNRUM. The Chief Minister said this while inaugurating three bridges situated across the Nambul river in the heart of Imphal city recently. With another bridge across the Imphal river at Lamlong bazar being inaugurated by the state works minister, the State capital witnessed the inauguration of four bridges in a single day.
