Promoting environmentally sustainable transport (EST) is a must to mitigate adverse environmental and health impact in the city, said the speakers at a national workshop and policy dialogue yesterday.

The EST includes non-motorised vehicles, bicycles, pedestrianisation schemes and vehicles with less emission of pollutants, they added.

The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday unanimously adopted four resolutions, which were moved one after the other under Rule 211 by relaxation of Rule 103(2) and other relevant rules by different members of the house.

To achieve rapid growth, governments must promote economic integration which, at its core, is about the mobility of people, products, and ideas.

Senior Economist, World Bank Somik V. Lall said that instead of worrying about the size of metropolises, cities and towns, the World Development Report 2009 (WDR) calls for policymakers to worry about making sure that these places work well.

Under City Development Package, as many as seven main most important city roads have been completed at a cost of Rs 650 million in Sialkot. Official sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday that the local business community has contributed 25 percent for the accomplishment of these roads in Sialkot City.
