Mumbai, September 4 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up a Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling facility on the premises of Deonar dumping ground soon. According to the sources, the plant will be operational in the next two years. Interestingly, the construction waste will be recycled to make building tiles, bricks and paver blocks.

An innovative discipline of vermiculture biotechnology, the breeding and propagation of earthworms and the use of its castings has become an important tool of waste recycling the world over. Epigeics like Eisenia foetida and Eudrilus euginiae have been used in converting organic wastes (agro waste and domestic refuse) into vermicompost.

The work of Amin Bazar sanitary landfill project is likely to begin in September subject to approval of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council.
Officials of the Dhaka City Corporation said they had already acquired 50 acres of land in Amin Bazar area of Savar in Dhaka for the implementation of the proposed two-year project, undertaken by Waste Management Division involving about Tk 65 crore.

Speakers at a day-long workshop on Thursday underscored the need for proper and hygienic management of medical waste to free the environment from pollution.

They suggested for providing adequate training on waste management to all associated with the clinical and diagnostic activities to protect the environment from degradation.

They underscored the need for the authorities and the individuals concerned to have the awareness of the harmful impact of medical waste in the interest of maintenance of sound environment.
