Speakers at a discussion yesterday said national unity as well as political will is needed to save the country's rivers from dying.

Environment is getting endangered, as the rivers are becoming extinct due to frequent withdrawal of water from the rivers and decrease of navigability, they added.

At least 2,000 industrial units operating in the city are constantly releasing toxic wastes polluting the environment at an alarming rate that result in spreading of diseases, including cancer.

Director of Environment Mohammad Shahjahan said this at a seminar on 'Threats on environment and public life from industrial waste' at the National Press Club in the city yesterday.

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 7: Visakhapatnam would soon become another Chennai at the rate in which the groundwater in the district is turning salty. Residents of coastal battery near the collectorate, Kota Veedhi, the old post office and the port areas in One Town, Mulakuddu and Nagarapalem besides, parts of Thagarapuvalasa in the rural areas were in distress recently after it was found that the water they drew from their wells tasted salty.

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 7: An expert study has revealed that groundwater in the coastal areas of the state is slowly turning salty. Unless urgent remedial action is taken, the farmers of the area would face crop failure and attendant financial crisis. The hydro geochemistry study was conducted by a group from the environmental science department of the Gitam University.

As the city gears up for the festive season, the high court has fixed responsibility for tackling the pollution caused by the immersion of Durga, Lakshmi and Kali idols in the Hooghly.

On Friday, Calcutta High Court directed the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC), Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) and Calcutta police to constitute a committee to devise a way to remove garbage from the Hooghly within seven days of the immersion.

Rawalpindi Environmental Improvement Project (REIP) has failed to launch Rs 72 million project of laying water supply lines and installing new tube wells in nine union councils of Potohar Town. Sources told Daily Times on Thursday that last year the REIP had made a plan to launch this project but due to general elections in February 2008, the project could not be started in time.
