Mumbai, August 18 To encourage eco-friendly celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in the city, the IIT Bombay (IIT-B) and Save Powai Lake Committee will launch its annual eco-friendly Ganesh idol-making workshop for schools from Saturday.

NAGAON, August 3: After detection of fluoride and iron in underground water sources in different areas under Hojai subdivision, the PHE Hojai division has implemented different water supply schemes including installation of wells and tube wells, piped water supply scheme, fluoride-free water in fluoride-prone areas, testing of drinking water under the National Rural Drinking Water Quality Monitoring (NRDWQM) programme during the last 20 years to redress the problem of contaminated water in Nagaon district.

Consumers are often victims of poor quality water supplied by civic authorities. Besides water borne diseases, in many districts of the country, consumers suffer the debilitating effects of high levels of toxic heavy metals and even pesticides and other chemicals in water. Now two recent orders of the apex consumer court have opened the doors of the consumer court to petitions from citizens on the poor quality of water. Both the orders give directions to the municipal bodies to ensure the safety of water supplied to citizens.

The first monitoring was undertaken on August 22, 2008. When the farmers group visited the CETP for sampling, they observed bypass of untreated effluents and the district administration and the pollution control board was informed of the same. On the complaints of the community, the regional officer, Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board and the CETP officials rushed to the site.

Coal is abundant and affordable in the Asia Pacific region, and for the foreseeable future could be used to meet the region's growing energy needs, but what becomes of those needs when air is too dirty to breathe; water is too polluted to drink; soil too contaminated to grow crops; land is unfit for habitation; and global warming unleashes unimaginable environmental disasters?
