Mumbai: Public water taps in the city could soon be a thing of the past. The state plans to replace them with bottled water booths to ensure slum dwellers get potable water at Rs5 for a 20-litre can. Water supply and sanitation minister Laxman Dhobale on Wednesday said his government plans to introduce the scheme in slum areas in the first phase.

Industry may soon have to pay a lot more for the water it uses. The Union government is in talks with various state governments to draft a model Bill that would lead to a multi-fold increase in water charges for industry, senior government officials told Business Standard.

BWSSB Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu on Friday said the proposed increase in water tariff would not be introduced until the summer concludes.
