Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

LUCKNOW: Thunderstorms followed by light rains in some parts of the state on Tuesday night and on Wednesday, though came as a relief but the amount of rains was very low. Weatherman said that the circulations which caused thunderstorms have passed but newer ones are on their way, hence the state should expect some more action in the coming days.

New delhi : Soon Delhiites will no longer have to depend on the "unpredictable" weatherman. The India Meterological Department (IMD) is in the process of upgrading its infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology which will not only make weather forecasting as much as 95% accurate, but also much faster.

On Thursday, the Met department confirmed what Delhiites had been suspecting all along. This December has been one of the warmest ever with temperatures staying above normal for a large part of the month. It was the second warmest December in the recorded history of the Capital since 1901.

Gujarat state of India receives annual rainfall of 828 mm in 35 rainy days with coefficient of variation of 50%. Considering the abnormality of weather particularly rainfall during the monsoon, Anand Agricultural University (AAU), Anand, Gujarat has prepared almanac predicting district-wise daily rainfall during monsoon 2007 for beneficiaries for the farming community as well as planners.

The distribution of rainfall in the Tarai region of Uttarakhand is very erratic in space and time and occurrence of occasional droughts is not uncommon.
