Independent evaluations of the impact and legacy of large donor-funded integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs) are critically important but rarely undertaken. The India Eco-Development Project around Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR-IEDP) in southern India received US$ 6.0 million, of which 43.2% was spent on community-based conservation activities.

The Sundarbans of India and Bangladesh is the only mangrove in the world where tigers still live. The Sundarbans has been under various forms of management for about 2,000 years, and is classified as a Tiger Conservation Landscape of Global Priority. Little is known about the Sundarbans tigers, which are threatened by habitat destruction, prey depletion, and direct tiger loss.

Khonoma is a village in Nagaland and home to the proud Angami tribe. The region was once rich in biodiversity and wildlife but had been stripped clear of most of its wildlife by 1993. However the trajectory of conservation efforts in Khonoma in the last decade has been awe inspiring.

Efforts to bolster tiger population in Sariska Two tigers, one male and one female, were introduced in Sariska Tiger Reserve, where the tiger population had dropped to zero, in June 2008. KOKRAJHAR, Dec 19: Hundreds of butterflies of different varieties are being killed due to vehicular movement at Bismuri-Sarpang (Bhutan) Road daily, which pass through the thick Chirang Reserve Forest in Kokrajhar district, but no measures has been adopted to protect the varied species of butterflies.

In the wake of severe fighting in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, worried rangers began a painstaking census late last month of the park's highly endangered mountain gorillas, nearly a third of the world's known population.
