Pemex, the Mexican government oil industry, has been held accountable for damaging the environment, health and economy of people in the Atasta peninsula. Greenpeace, cemda (Mexican Center for Environmental Law) and Marea Azul, a local environmental ngo , have been accused for polluting the Pom Lagoon in the Atasta peninsula of the state of Campeche originated by the spills and leakages from the oil exploration wells.

According to them, bad maintenance of the oil exploration wells that have been drilled in the Pom Lagoon channels has been a major cause of pollution. Leakage of oil has taken its toll on fisheries in the lagoon and has affected the community's traditional livelihood.

The agencies have requested the environment minister to declare the Pom Lagoon a "Restoration Zone' and force Pemex to perform the rehabilitation process within the nature protected area.
