MINING WOES

For the Broken Hill Pty Co Ltd (BLIP), the Australian mining giant, the coming year could entail many a court session as it faces trial in Victoria's Supreme Court for alleged environmental negligence related to the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in Papua New Guinea. Landowners in Papua New Guinea seeking com- pensation have argued that the mine in which BHP has a 52 per cent stake, dumps 80,000 tonnes of waste everyday into the Ok Tedi and Fly river systems which has reduced the number of fish, degenerated rainforests, and destroyed food gardens.
