A response, from agencies that have facilitated the translocation of tigers, throwing light on the selection process of tigers in Ranthambhore
Using the skill and knowledge of field forest officers in Ranthambhore, we selected two young adult tigresses that were yet to carve out their own territories. That made them ideal candidates for Sariska.
The male tiger was selected because it was an adult from the periphery of Ranthambhore who also did not have a stable home territory. With increasing number of tigers in Ranthambhore, it appears, tigers such as these find it difficult to establish exclusive home ranges.
Translocating tigers is never easy. It is risky and expensive. However, it is something that should be considered for areas where tigers have decreased and the reasons for this can be addressed. Perhaps, in the future translocation can also be used to improve the gene flow of wild tigers. Sariska is the first step in that direction.
