Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Girja Shankar Rai & Others Vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Others dated 14/09/2022.

The Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Uttar Pradesh, assured the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that remedial action will be taken protection of Laxmi Tal at Jhansi by controlling the pollution and removing the encroachments.

The court noted that against 26 MLD of sewage only 8-10 MLD is treated which needs to be looked into and remedied. In the absence of recharging source for the waterbody, treated sewage compliant with BOD and faecal coliform level may be used for filling the Laxmi Tal and growing fisheries.

The NGT order was in response to the complaints of encroachment of Laxmi Tal and disposal of untreated sewage and sullage in it.
