Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Abhiram Baskey and Others Vs State of Odisha & Others dated 10/08/2023.

The matter related to encroachment upon the river bed of Subarnarekha by running a plastic factory unit and coal depot thereby reducing the natural flow of river water and obstructing the passage of flood embankment.

It was alleged ecosystem of the river Subernarekha at Sekhsarai Mouza under Jaleswar Tahasil was getting damaged due to the discharge of effluents and wastewater into the river. It was also alleged that a concrete boundary wall was reducing the natural flow of water and obstructing the passage of flood embankment.

The NGT, Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata directed the constitution of a four member committee to visit the site and submit its report. If violations are found, initiate appropriate action as per law against the violators and also determine environmental compensation, the order added.
