Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding illegal mining of bauxite in Lohardaga, Jharkhand. An application was registered on the basis of a news item published in Prabhat Khabar, September 13, 2023.

The news item revealed that Lohardaga, known as the bauxite city and in the forest areas large scale rampant illegal mining of bauxite is going on. The bauxite is "clandestinely transported in the trucks having forged number plates, on account of which Lohardaga has become a dumping yard of the illegally transported bauxite".  It was alleged that on account of such a dumping, the ground water level has gone down. The wells and boring of the area has dried up and the sound pollution has crossed the permissible limit and the entire area is affected by the dust pollution.

The NGT was of the view that the news item raised a substantial issue relating to compliance of environmental laws and directed that a joint committee would examine the issue and submit a fact finding and action taken report before the Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata.
