MCL is the second largest subsidiary of Coal India in terms of coal output

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), which had shut down its six mines in Ib valley region over the weekend following an order of the state steel and mines department, has moved the Supreme Court seeking stay on the government directive. The coal company is particularly encouraged as in a similar case earlier the apex court had granted it relief. MCL is the second largest subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL) in terms of coal output.

Reliance Power Ltd on Monday announced it had commenced coal production at two of its Sasan power project’s captive coal mines—Moher and Moher Amlohri extension. The company did not divulge any details on the amount of initial coal production. The announcement comes on the same day when the government decided to ask the companies holding 58 blocks to present their case before an inter-ministerial group later this week.

CEC recommends permitting resumption of mining operations by Category A mines

The Supreme Court will pass its order on Monday on the petitions for resuming mining in the three districts of Karnataka, which was suspended by the court last year. A bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam heard arguments from all sides, including the associations of miners and steel industries. The steel industries stated it was getting only 15 million tonnes whereas their requirement was 30 million tonnes. They complained that for the first time the country had to import iron ore.

Expert panel says effective checks and balances in place to ensure work in scientific manner

Iron ore mining in Karnataka is set to restart with the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on Thursday giving the green signal to ‘A category’ of mines in the State to resume operations, provided they have all approvals in place. In the report submitted to the apex court, the panel said a system of effective checks and balances has been put in place to ensure that mining takes place in a scientific manner. A total 18 mines come under category A, which recorded least irregularities or no irregularities, and of which one mine has all the approvals required.

PANJIM: In a major development, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has directed two mines operating within 10 kms of the Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary in Sanguem taluka to shut down operations with immediate effect for failing to get clearance from the National Wildlife Board.

The orders have been issued on August 13 to two mining leases operated by – Gangadhar Narsinghdas Agrawal and Pandurang Timblo Industries, under section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
