JAIPUR: The state government is again in the dock for allowing mining of bajri (riverbed sand) allegedly in violation of SC directives. On the basis of a public interest litigation filed in this regard, the Rajasthan High Court has sought a clarification from the government and its mining department within seven days.

An NGO, Nature Club of Rajasthan, has accused the government of continuing with the old system of bajri mining even though the rules governing sand quarries have been amended in accordance with the SC guidelines. It is alleged that the mining department's notification of June 21 this year has neutralized the amended rules in favour of the illegal bajri miners.

PANJIM: Even as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar threw down a gauntlet to Indian Bureau of Mines to close mines in Goa, Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) officials began inspection of mining leases in Goa, on Wednesday, ahead of Minister Jayanti Natarajan’s visit to the state next week.

Sources stated that eight officials, four from MoEF and four from Central Pollution Control Board are down in Ponda and have begun inspection of mines to verify whether mining dumps are being handled by mining lease holders without obtaining environment clearances (ECs).

The Supreme Court has given a nod to 18 iron ore mines to resume operations in Karnataka, but only one of them fulfills the conditions required to start the operations. As many as 12 mines have to get various statutory approvals, including rehabilitation and reclamation plan, forest and environment clearances and permission from the Departments of Mines at the State and the Centre. The process could take at least a month and in some cases one year, depending on the licences required to resume mining.

PANJIM: Thirty mining leases which have secured Environmental Clearances (ECs) from Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), which are non operational, will be considered for signing lease agreement with the State government ahead of notification of Indian Stamp (Goa Amendment) Bill, 2012.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while speaking to Herald on Monday pointed out that there are around 337 mining leases granted by Goa Government to various parties, however, approximately 120 mining leases have ECs and have applied for renewal or extension of the mining leases for further term of 20 years.
