Enable Block:

With conventional sources of electricity likely to get scarcer and more expensive in the coming years, the Delhi government is weighing the option of generating more solar power in the near future.

Grid-based solar power only reaches only households that are connected to energy supply, and simply subsidises costly solar for an already-reached population

India’s solar power policy is now entering round two. Much needs to be reviewed and reworked, since the business of solar energy has seen massive turbulence in India as well as globally. In the first phase (2010 to 2013) of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM), the target was to set up 1,000-2,000 MW of grid-based solar power in the country. By 2013, the country has indeed commissioned some 1,000 MW of solar power, but 700 MW of this target comes from a non-JNNSM state, Gujarat.

Welspun Energy, India’s biggest developer of solar projects, on Tuesday said it has commissioned a 15 Mega—Watt solar project in Rajasthan ahead of schedule.

As part of the first Indo-French collaboration in the renewable energy sector, two solar photo voltaic-based power plants of a total capacity of 20 MW are being established at Gajner village in Bikaner district at a cost of $ 42 million. The first of the two projects was commissioned under the National Solar Mission recently.

P. R. Fonroche -- a joint venture between P. R. Clean Energy and Fonroche Energie S.A.S. -- has collaborated with Mahindra EPC to commission the projects within a year of the award by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam.

Welspun will sign MoUs with Gujarat Energy Development Authority (GEDA) for 200 megawatts (Mw) of renewable energy certificates (RECs)

Welspun Energy Limited on Wednesday informed that the company will make investments worth Rs 15,000 crore in the next three years for renewable energy capacities in India. The board of directors of the company has recently given its approval for the investment plans, a top company official informed in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

In a first of its kind of initiative, leading corporate entities have come together and aggregated their demand for green energy. A consortium comprising nine companies across sectors like information technology (IT), manufacturing and retail, among others, have joined hands for group buying of renewable energy like that from wind, solar and biomass.

The first meeting of this newly formed association and its various partners including banks is scheduled for Wednesday when the modalities of the tender and terms of contract would be discussed after deciding the total energy requirement of the consortium. Rohan Parikh, head of green initiatives at Infosys, which is a key partner of the consortium, pegs the requirement to be around 500-600 million units.

With regard to the draft policy document on JNNSM Phase II that was released by the ministry on its website, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) organised a roundtable discussion with stakeholders for discussion on 22nd December 2012. Representatives from the industry, NGOs and state government attended the discussion.

With no rain or dust, November was one of the better months for solar power plants in the country

The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) recently released data of power generation from solar plants constructed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) for November. And the results span from very good to dismal. November means short days for the solar plants, but according to Vineet Mittal, managing director of Welspun Energy, a solar power developer: “November is one of the better months with no rain or dust and with lower temperatures, closer to the conditions they are made for, increasing output from the cells.”

Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), funding for solar projects and active participation by States are key issues that need to be addressed in Phase II of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Missio

There has been no violation of policy guidelines for implementation of schemes under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, the Government today informed Rajya Sabha.
