To urge for exempting State from sand mining ban

The government on Tuesday told the Goa Legislative Assembly that it will move the National Green Tribunal (NGT) next month, urging it to exempt Goa from the ban on the removal of sand from river beds.

Of 83 environmental cases pending in various courts across the country, over 70% were filed in 2013 and most of them are related to mining.

Sand mining has many devastating traits. For one, it destroys the river beds, changes the course of the river, causes banks to flood as well as washes away houses that lie near its path.
