Broiler farm litter mixed with wood shavings and poultry droppings make an excellent fuel for generating power, contends Fibrogen Ltd, a UK-based developer, builder and operator of power stations (Technology Partnership Initiative. issue 7).

Fibrogen buys poultry litter and transports the same to covered storage pits in the power station. Loaded through conveyor belts into the furnace, the fuel is burnt at temperatures greater than 850'C. The furnace heats up water in the boiler to produce steam which drives a conventional steam turbine linked to a generator with an output of 15.1 MW. The net output is supplied to a 33 kilovolt power line which connects the power station to the local electricity sub-station.
