A cost-benefit analysis of paddy farming
Farmers from Bazua, a small village in Khulna district, have freed their village from saltwater aggression. In 2005, they resolved not to farm saltwater shrimp. Parimal Mandal, a resident, calculated the economy of the shift. Last year, he cultivated paddy and watermelon and earned Tk 100,000 (US $1,478) from an acre (0.4 ha) of land. If I had leased the land for shrimp farming, I would have earned Tk 3,000 (US $44) a year, said Mandal.
