 WRONGLY PUNISHED [1]

Oktay Konyar, a leader of an environmental campaign in Turkey has been arrested. "I am being punished because I wanted the implementation of a court decision,' said Konyar. The residents of Ovacik have been engaged in a campaign against Eurogold, a gold mining company, which intends to carry out mining near Ovacik. Environmentalists fear that the mining activities may prove to be hazardous, as they will involve collecting large amounts of water containing cyanide. Since Bergama lies within a seismic zone, the storage tanks might crack during a quake, releasing poisonous chemicals.
