Sand mining on the banks of river Saryu, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh has resulted in diversion of the course of the river. Flooding, crops being affected and environmental degradation were some of the effects of illegal mining. The application was filed by Aditya Tiwari and the NGT in January 2019 had sought a report from the District Magistrate, Ayodhya within one month.
[2] Even after six months, no such report was submitted.
NGT has given directions for the District Magistrate, Ayodhya to be present before the Tribunal on the next date of hearing.
