Report on steps taken for treatment of untreated sewage joining river Musi, Telangana, 15/09/2020 [1]

Report of the Telangana State Pollution Control Board in compliance of the National Green Tribunal order of June 22, 2020 in Original Application No. 426 of 2018 filed by Mohd. Nayeem Pasha & Others. The NGT had directed the state of Telangana to submbit a compliance report on the steps taken for treatment of untreated sewage joining the river Musi.

The report mentioned that the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) submitted status report of STPs operational in and around river Musi and action taken on suggestions made by the CPCB. Further, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) submitted compliance report for enhancement of existing treatment capacity of sewage treatment plants (STP) presently under the control of HMDA.

They include the following:

a. Augmentation of 5 MLD STP at Rangadhamuni lake

b. Augmentation of 20 MLD STP at Khairtabad

c. Augmentation of 30 MLD STP at KIMS hospital

HMWSSB has engaged M/s Shah Technical Consultants, Mumbai for preparation of Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan As per the Master Plan submitted by the consultants the total sewage generated for the year 2018 was about 1782 MLD and projected sewage generation for the year 2036 is 2815 MLD.

The present installed treatment capacity of existing STPs was 772 MLD. For 2036 requirement, it is proposed 62 STPs with a capacity of 2057 MLD. And out of the 62 STPs, the prioritized 31 STPs proposals are formulated into three packages and submitted to the Telangana government.

With respect to utilization of treated sewage and utilization of treated sewage to the maximum extent instead of discharging into river Musi - the HMWSSB at present was supplying treated waste water to gardens.
