Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding steps taken to stop pollution of Kithiganahalli lake, Anekal, Karnataka, 10/06/2021 [1]

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Dr. Sanjay Rao & Others Vs State of Karnataka dated 10/06/2021.

The issue for consideration is the remedial action against pollution of Kithiganahalli lake situated behind Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital, within remits of Bommasandra Pura Sabha, Anekal, Karnataka. The report filed by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, February 18, 2020 acknowledged damage to the lake by discharge of untreated sewage and other waste.

The NGT vide order, June 19, 2020 directed remedial action. The NGT, June 10, 2021 took note of the affidavit filed by the Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development, Karnataka on the steps taken by the government of Karnataka to stem the pollution of Kithiganahalli lake.

The report informed the court that substantial progress has been achieved in lake rejuvenation work by Bommasandra Industries Association (BIA) and activities like excavation, segregation and safe disposal of legacy waste has been completed as also removal of silt from lake bed to increase the water storage. It is submitted that the state in association with BIA is taking all the necessary steps in completing the lake rejuvenation works including installation and commissioning of STP.

The counsel for the state of Karnataka informed the NGT that substantial work has been completed but on the account of the COVID-19 pandemic, some work still remains to be executed which would be completed soon.

The court directed the remaining work to be completed expeditiously and positively within three months.
