Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of Sudhansu Sekhar Patra & Others Vs State of Odisha dated 22/11/2023.

The matter related to pollution by industrial establishments in Sundargarh mainly iron and steel industries.

NGT directed notice to be issued to 11 industrial establishments in addition to Odisha State Pollution Control Board; District Magistrate, Sundargarh; Central Pollution Control Board and Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Bhubaneswar.

The NGT, November 22 directed a four member committee to visit the site and submit its report within two months. In case violations are found, the committee should recommend penalties as well as environmental compensation and also suggest remedial measures, if any. According to the complainant, Sudhansu Sekhar Patra, many of the industrial establishments do not have the requisite pollution control devices installed within the plant area. "Sponge iron units have installed the dedusting systems for namesake that are not maintained and are functioning with the defective bags".
