In the original application, registered suo-motu, the Tribunal is considering the issue of protecting the habitat of Himalayan Brown Bear which is depleting due to unplanned disposal and treatment of waste in Sonmarg region of Kashmir. By the order dated August 5, 2024, six respondents were impleaded and notices were issued to them.

NGT, January 2, 2025 directed notices to be issued to Sonmarg Development Authority; Director General, Rural Sanitation, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu & Kashmir; Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Jammu & Kashmir. The three respondents have been directed to file their response by way of affidavit at least one week before the next date of hearing, April 22, 2025.
