With a military background, how did you land up in politics?
I was in the Navy for 15 years since 1949. During the China war, I wanted to fight for the nation. I appeared in an open selection and was commissioned. Following the victory against Pakistan in 1969, I retired from the Army after 20 years of service.
In 1972, I contested the Hajipur municipal elections. Since 1973, I was elected chairperson for three terms until my voluntary resignation in 1989. Then I joined politics. I fought the assembly elections once and three parliamentary elections
