Olive Ridley turtles are as endangered as the tiger. The two species enjoy the same legal protection. The beaches of Gahirmatha in Orissa's Bhadrak district are a globally important nesting site for the marine turtles. Conservationists are concerned over the large volume of dredging, lighting, shipping traffic, marine pollution, oil spills and urban development that will happen with the building of a port so close to the home of Olive Ridleys.
