 Fair air on CNG [1]

THE government of Delhi has decided to promote the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative, less polluting fuel. More CNG outlets are to be opened in the near future in Delhi, as well as the neighbouring states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Besides, Delhi's Lt Governor, P K Dave, has suggested a complete waiver of customs and port duties on the kit required for converting petrol-run vehicles to CNG-run vehicles.

According to Dave, the cost of a CNG conversion kit is about Rs 25,000 but if the duties and levies are waived and the Centre is willing to provide a subsidy of 25 per cent per unit, the price can be reduced to Rs 14,000. Dave says that CNG will also prove more economical for drivers: it costs Rs 2.40 less per litre than petrol.

The government also intends to introduce lead-free petrol in the city. It has proposed that 2-stroke scooter and autorickshaw engines be converted to 4-stroke cleaner engines.
