 Garbage power [1]

A fuel cell which burns gas from a landfill site has begun operating in Groten, Connecticut, US. The project utilises a 200 kW phosphoric acid fuel cell which is expected to generate power from the site for at least 18 months. A study conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency says that as many as 1,700 landfill sites in the US could be suitable for similar power generation projects using fuel cells. The fuel cell is fitted with a gas cleaning system to remove chlorinated compounds, sulphur compounds and other contaminants from the landfill gas before it enters the fuel cell stack ( Modern Power Systems , Vol 16, No 8).
