Rural Electrification Corpo-ration Ltd (REC), a government of India enterprise, will soon introduce an improved system for power supply in the rural areas. The system, called Si-Spa, will ensure voltage regulation, reliability in power supply and reduction in power losses at different levels, an REC spokesperson said. The system, costing between Rs 5-15 crore, would be introduced initially in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Reserve Bank of India has granted funds for Si-Spa as indirect finance to agriculture under priority sector. The spokesperson said that the new scheme was being introduced to overcome inadequacies of back-up transmission and distri-bution system for agriculture loads.
