This report examines the development and status of norms and standards as well as current trends in respect of the linkages between human rights and protection of the environment. Moreover, this report discusses the links between human rights, environmental protection, and economic benefits derived from them, as they relate to the three pillars of sustainable development: environmental, economic, and social. The report provides information and shares knowledge, but also seeks to contribute to further developments in this area by providing a sound basis for work by UNEP and OHCHR, as well as other UN and regional organizations. In the specific context of the Rio+20, the report aims to raise awareness of the potential for concrete actions to foster sustainable development based on the linkages between human rights and the environment.
