indian laboratories are in a contemptible condition. Of the 367 laboratories that use animals for experiments, 300 lack basic facilities to house these animals, reveals an inspection of the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experimental Animals (cpcsea). None of the 300 laboratories adhere to scientific protocols or standards while using animals in the production of vaccines, states a cpcsea report, which reveals the plight of the animals. The report cites the example of the Chennai-based King's Institute of Preventive Medicine, which still practices an obsolete method of producing anti-rabies vaccines using the brains of sheep
