Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sindhudurg Jilla Shramajivi Rapan Machchimar Sangh & Others Vs Govt. of Maharashtra & Others dated 22/05/2019 regarding banning the use of purse seine and mini purse seine nets in course of fishing having regard to adverse impact on the marine life and also on environment friendly fishing by small fishermen.

The applicants have stated that even though notifications like the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation Act 1981 have been issued prohibiting purse seine gear by mechanised fishing vessels, the same are not being implemented. The NGT directs the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Maharashtra to furnish a report about status of compliance of the notifications within one month.
