Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding marine pollution, 03/12/2019 [1]

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Lt. Col. Sarvadaman Singh Oberoi Vs Union of India & Others dated 03/12/2019 regarding formulation of an action plan to restore sea water quality along the Indian coastal areas. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has been asked to submit a comprehensive status report with regard to coastal pollution by way of classification of coastal areas in priority-I to V as has been done for 351 polluted stretches within three months.

The NGT stated that it was necessary to ensure that coastal water at beach remains fit for bathing and survival of aquatic life, fishing and contact sports in accordance with Sea Water Criteria in terms of directions of CPCB of the Water Act, 1974.

All the state Pollution Control Boards (PCBs)/ Pollution Control Committee's (PCCs) of coastal states/ union territories have to present informtion to CPCB within one month on the payment of compensation for discharge of any untreated sewage into water bodies. Default would invite payment of Rs. 10 lakhs per month till compliance. A copy of this order should also be sent to all the Chief Secretaries, state PCBs/PCCs of all coastal states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar, Puducherry and CPCB.
