 ISRAEL [1]

Farming in desert, and that too fish farming, would seem an impossible task to most. But a team of enterprising farmers led by Yitzhak Levy has developed a super intensive technique to produce yields which are not only profitable but also much higher than those of fish ponds in favourable conditions.

The Nizanne Sinai farming settlement lies in the Negev desert in southern Israel. The fish ponds teeming with thousands of tilapia and carp are enclosed in eight green bubbles. The green bubbles are made of plastic sheets and are well- ventilated. The computer- controlled bubble ponds are heated with the help of the the blazing desert sun. According to farmers, the ponds produce upto 20 kg of fish per cu m - the highest yield in the world for closed warm water ponds. Each us $650,000 pool produces eight to ten tonnes of fish annually.
