Bangladesh will ban vehicles with two-stroke engines by September 2002. Besides, the country has asked all vehicles in Dhaka and Chittagong to be converted to compressed natural gas (CNG). The government is planning to increase the use of natural gas in the transport and industrial sectors. It plans to set up 100 CNG refuelling stations within the next two years. Estimates indicate that if 50 per cent of the vehicles in Dhaka and Chittagong are converted to CNG, the country could save about US $100 million annually on the mounting import bill of transport fuel. The country has around 24.25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves.
