The Uttarakhand Jan Jagriti Sansthan, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working in Tehri, Uttaranchal, has filed a public interest litigation petition in the Supreme Court to save 90,000 trees. The NGO is seeking to thwart a proposed felling drive that will pave the way for a power transmission line of the Tehri dam.

About 5,000 trees have already been chopped down in the forests of Jaikot-Phalsari, Tamiyar and Kusraila. But an agitation led by Chipko activists has prevented further felling from taking place. The NGO has requested officials to increase the height of transmission towers, so that wiring can be done without disturbing the tree canopy.
