The present petition related to increased ammonia levels in Yamuna due to discharge of pollutants and on a larger level to river pollution in India. The SC observed that either the sewage is not treated through a sewage treatment plant before being discharged or the treatment plants are not functional or incpacitated.

The SC took  serious view of the situation and said that the forest officers and staff would be in no position to protect the environment and the forests which are normally vast tracts of uninhabited land and of which poachers take undue advantage for carrying out their nefarious activities.

The matter related to the motor accident compensation of Rs. 22 lakhs awarded by the High Court to the claimant-appellants. The apex court increased the amount by Rs. 11.20 lakhs.
