The Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers presented its report on ‘Insecticides and Pesticides – Promotion and Development including Safe Usage – Licensing Regime for Insecticides’ on December 19, 2023. Pesticides are broadly of four types: insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and bio-pesticides.

The Government of India has introduced the Insecticides (Prohibition) Order, 2023. It was published on 3rd October, 2023 and has come into immediate effect. This Order aims at regulating and restricting the usage of specific insecticides, carries significant implications for the insecticide industry and agriculture.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, (MoAFW) on September 01, 2023, published the Draft Insecticides (Sixth Amendment) Rules, 2023 to further amend the Insecticides Rules, 1971.

The Guidelines on Alternatives to Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) is designed to: (a) Identify the roles of the different stakeholders in the process of replacing HHPs and suggest how they can support one another in order to maintain agricultural productivity while protecting health and the environment; (b) Provide information and reassurance

Order of the Supreme Court in the matter of Vanashakti & Other Vs Union of India & Others dated 27/03/2023.

The Supreme Court directed the Union Government to place on record the final report of the Dr S K Khurana sub committee and the report dated September 6, 2022 of the committee chaired by Dr T P Rajendran. The Union Government was also directed to file a further affidavit explaining the basis on which action has been taken presently only with respect to three pesticides in the notification dated 2 February 2023.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) on February 02, 2023, issued the draft of Insecticides (Prohibition) Order, 2023 under the powers conferred by sub-section 2 of Section 27 read with section 28 and sub-section (1) of section 36 of the Insecticides Act, 1968.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on 24th November 2022, published the Insecticides (Second Amendment) Rules, 2022 to further amend the Insecticides Rules, 1971.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) on November 22, 2022, published the Draft Insecticides (Amendment) Rules, 2022. To further amend the Insecticides Rules, 1971 They shall come into effect on November 22, 2022.

The Ministry of agriculture and farmer’s welfare (MoAFW) on October 27, 2022, issued a notification to further amend the Insecticides Rules, 1971. this has come into force on October 27, 2022.
