Order of the Supreme Court in the matter of Bhopal Municipal Corporation Vs Subhash C Pandey & Others dated 07/04/2025.

The affidavit of compliance was filed by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation regarding implementation of the suggestions of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). The SC granted time to the Bhopal Municipal Corporation to report further compliance with the suggestions of the NEERI till the end of June 2025.

The apex court directed that the compliance report should be forwarded by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation to the NEERI. NEERI would inspect the relevant sites and submit a detailed report regarding compliances made by the municipal corporation. NEERI has been directed to file a report by the end of July 2025 which would be considered by the SC on August 11, 2025.

The matter is related to the Adampur landfill site. Urban waste disposal from Bhopal began at Adampur in 2018 and after a couple of incidents of fire at the site, environmentalist Subhash C Pandey moved the NGT in 2023, charging violation of solid waste rules by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation at the Adampur site. The NGT had imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 crore on BMC in August 2023, which was challenged by BMC in the Supreme Court.
