 Cops compensated [1]

Traffic police in Delhi will be granted an allowance for breathing polluted air. The compensation amount will be graded according to rank, ranging from Rs 100 for constables to Rs 200 for inspectors.

A study conducted by the capital's Central Road Research Institute and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, concluded traffic police develop chest and lung abnormalities due to high pollution exposure. Another study by the Vallabhai Patel Chest Institute, commissioned by police authorities, revealed respiratory problems include inflammation of the lungs and bronchial hyperactivity, which causes asthma.

The studies reveal pollution is highest at intersections in Old Delhi, Azad market and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. Previous efforts to reduce the inhalation of vehicular emissions included the introduction of gas masks for policemen. However, this was discontinued as the masks were cumbersome and restrictive.
