THE world's highest observatory will be set up at Hanle, Ladakh. It will be remote-controlled from Hoskote near Bangalore via satellite link. The prestigious project is being undertaken by the Bangalore-based Institute of Astro-physics (IIA). Located at an altitude of 4,517 metres above the sea level, compact in design and equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, the observatory will be capable of imaging the entire Universe.

"The excellent conditions, comprising more than 250 observing nights in a year, prompted us to undertake the difficult task of setting up an observatory in this remote region in the country. Hanle is known for its clear, cloudless sky," said Ramanath Cowsik, director, IIA. As a project of this magnitude and sophistication requires the use innovative and advanced technology, the department of science and technology has set up a national advisory committee. This includes eminent Indian scientists.
