The Karnataka High Court has dismissed a writ petition contending that the Harihar Polyfibre company near Bangalore was discharging untreated effluents into the Tungabharda river and that the villagers in the vicinity using the polluted water should be compensated. Samaja Parivartana Samudaya Sanghatane, a non-profit organisation based in Dharwad had filed a writ petition in 1985 alleging that discharge from the company into the river since 1973 had affected the farmers in the region. However, the company claims that it had been treating the effluents before discharge. The judges said that they were satisfied with the analysis of the Karnataka Pollution Control Board who concluded that the polluting content was within permissible levels. The bench has ordered the board to conduct periodic tests of the effluents .
