Water wealth: a briefing paper on the state of groundwater management in Bangladesh [1]

Urban Bangladesh faces a huge water crisis. Groundwater tables are falling rapidly, centuries-old urban water bodies have disappeared or severely polluted and urban floods are a regular occurrence in the rainy season in many cities. In addition to water scarcity, water quality of major rivers and canals is under threat. Groundwater pollution is also a threat to the society. The main cause of water shortage in urban Bangladesh is because the urban water paradigm grossly
interferes with the natural hydrological principles. Rain is led away from cities and does not recharge the groundwater, which is being mined extensively.
